Quit making it about YOU, its about THEM, it should always be about them!
What am I talking about exactly?
I’m talking about your audience, your readers, the lovely folks that come to your blog to find problem solving solutions.
The problem with a lot of bloggers of today is that they love to talk about themselves a lot, or at least too much I think.
Now don’t get me wrong here, I know you can still provide a lot of benefit and value by writing about “yourself” sometimes. For instance:
You could be sharing a strategy or case study that’s working for you.
Or you could be sharing a story that your audience can be inspired by and even relate to.
However, giving yourself too much appraisal, or generally talking about nothing else but You, You and more You, post after post, will probably do more harm than good.
These days people have a limited amount of patience, now more than ever.
People are always looking for ‘quick fixes’ or ‘quick solutions’, and if they happen to land on one of your blog posts for example, and find that you’re not helping them in any way with their problems, they’ll simply leave and visit another blog or website.
Now let me ask you this:
How many times can you afford to let that happen?
You’re not just turning visitors away, but you’re also turning away potential subscribers and yes, even potential customers as well.
So lesson number one?
Cut down on writing and publishing ‘ego-boosting’ or ‘self-appraisal’ blog posts, and start making your content about THEM! (Your audience), because here’s the darn truth of it all…
Until you’ve established some kind of relationship with your audience, no one will care about you or what you’re doing. I know this sounds harsh but just hear me out:
Most new visitors coming to your blog for the first time care only for what YOU can do for them, or how you can help them.
They’re not one bit interested in making friends with you or getting to know more about you, or at least that won’t be on their minds to start with. They want to see what kind of content you’ve got going and how any of it can be of value to them.
So the short and sweet message in this post is this:
If you want to make any impact with your blog. If you want to create more clarity for yourself and your audience. If you want to build a successful blogging business that people will talk about to their friendsQuit making it about you, and make it more about them, it's always about themClick To Tweet
That means writing content for the benefit of your audience.
I hear you Fabz, but how do you write for your audience?
You first need to “identify your target audience”, then build your community around that target audience, and then learn how to serve that community and audience better.
It won’t happen overnight I know, but you have to start now and stop pushing out meaningless post after post about you, you, you. Here’s some action points to take away with you.
- Identify your target audience. See what content your readers are reacting with the most, i.e. comments, shares, link backs, mentions etc.
- Connect and communicate with your audience on all levels. Learn more about your target audience, their goals and objectives to further identify their problems.
- Over deliver on value. Create exceptional problem solving content using every platform available to you, not just your blog.
- Make your content personal. Share relatable stories, address your readers throughout, post questions and use effective call-to-actions.
- Optimise for search. I believe in always writing for your audience first, but I also appreciate the value of optimising for search engines. Without search traffic, you have a blogging business with limited potential.
Like I said, writing for your audience is not a process you can achieve overnight, yes you will be able to write for your audience better by first understanding their needs better, and to do that you have to start connecting and building those relationships.
