As much as I love the internet, you just can’t help but notice the trend that seems to be happening more and more of right now.
What trend is that?
The trend of these so-called blogging and marketing gurus, claiming to have found the ultimate recipe, or secret – to building a successful and profitable business on the internet.
So they think they have.
Facebook and Twitter are no exception. And as much as I love marketing on social media, the amount of crap that I see advertised on these sites about these scams is truly remarkable.
No doubt you’ve seen a few yourself, some schmuck claiming to have discovered the secret recipe to earning 6 or even 7-figures a year.
And now, they want to share their revolutionary new system, business model, secret strategy or what ever the heck you want to call it with you. But wait, that comes at a premium.
Please, save me the bull sh*t.
Sadly though, way too many people are getting sucked into these kinds of scams.
The all too familiar scenario for newbies
So let’s imagine you’re totally new to blogging or online business.
You haven’t got the slightest idea as to where to start, but you’ve shown a genuine interest to want to learn more about starting an internet business.
Here’s a typical scenario you might have experienced –
You’ve done a bit of research online.
You found a few interesting forums, Q&A pages, membership sites, sales landing pages with some free offer that got you even more intrigued.
You’ve liked a few Facebook pages of successful entrepreneurs and marketers you’ve probably never even heard of before.
You’ve also subscribed to a few of their email newsletters in the process.
Then one glorious day, you scroll through your Facebook news feed to see an offer you simply can’t ignore.
I mean this crap is just too damn good to just keep on scrolling down.
What is it?
it’s some advertisement video with not one, but two happy looking dudes ranting passionately about how they’ve manage to build a 6-figure business online, all working from home using this hot new revolutionary system.
You’re instantly hooked and begin watching…
At the end, you’re left with just three things that stick in your mind like thorns.
- You can work from home… $$
- All you need is a cheap ass laptop… $$$
- You don’t need to do much work at all… $$$$
Wait! What? – You can start an internet business without doing much work?
Yep, that’s the ultimate selling point right there.
You can just jump straight in, get online and start earning money with your new venture within a few days, or weeks at the most, all using this amazing new system.
Your mind begins to wonder.
“Wow” you think to yourself. Before you know it, you’ll be on the road to having your own 6-figure a year internet business.
You think about sitting by a pool somewhere in Thailand, watching your affiliate account grow on your laptop. All whilst sipping on your favourite cocktail.
Yet, you fail to notice the strange smell of bull sh*t that seems to be getting stronger and stronger.
If you’ve ever even seen a sales page to one of these gimmick money making systems, or so-called “online business breakthrough systesm”, you must have been taken back right?
I mean just all those amazing screen shots of fat bank accounts, PayPal accounts and what not.
How about the photos of these folks who claim to have found the recipe for success, living it up by the pool on their laptops watching their affiliate income grow like crazy.
Heck that could be you my friend!!!
Hooked like a fish
Let’s go back to our scenario quickly –
So you’re now on a landing page for one of these money making systems.
You keep scrolling and reading, getting reeled in deeper by the minute.
You see more and more photos of guys and girls doing things like sky diving, swimming with great white sharks, skiing in Switzerland, lying on some beach in the Caribbean with beautiful woman surrounding them.
Yep… they’re just having the time of their life, and they’re not afraid to show it off to you, just so that you can get a real sense of what’s waiting for you if you buy into their crappy system.
That’s it, you’re instantly hooked and pumped like a mad dog.
After more reading and thorough convincing, you’re ready to flip out your credit card to start buying or subscribing into some system that will make you an overnight blogging or online business success.
Well guess what!
If you’ve already handed over your life’s savings to one of these stupid scams, you’ve been well and truly had. Tough luck is all I can say.
If you’ve not yet taken action but you’re seriously thinking about it, STOP, please just STOP.
Put your credit card back in your wallet, and forget about it.
The hard truth
The truth about most of these stupid online ads, marketing videos, flashy claims or what ever else you want to call them. They’re full of genuine sh1t.
Still don’t quite understand what I mean?
They’re nothing but scams to give you hope that you can find online success and financial relief. Understand that?
You’ve heard this saying I’m sure.
If something sounds like it’s too good to be true, then it probably is.
Those cheap marketing videos you see on Facebook and YouTube are everywhere. And they’re all talking about one thing, and that one thing is total nonsense.
They’re designed to lure desperate and needy people into investing into their crap.
Two things you need to know if you’re new to internet business
- Building an online business or a profitable website or blog does NOT and will NEVER happen over night.
- There is NO such thing as a ‘legitimate’ money making system, secret money making strategy, business system, secret blueprint or anything of the kind that exists on the world wide web.
I can afford to say that because in the 12 years of doing business online, I’ve not come across a single case study that suggests any of these systems work.
I’m tired of getting emails from people asking me for advice about these so-called money making and online business systems.
Don’t throw your money to membership sites that ask you to pay to make money.
Don’t throw your money to silly systems and software that claims to make you income whilst you sleep.
It’s all a load of trash.
If you’ve stumbled upon this post looking for validation that any such money making or online business system exists and actually works, well they freaking don’t. Especially when the site in question is asking you to put a ton of your hard earned cash up front.
So if you didn’t know, now you do hopefully.
Now if you want to know how to build a REAL internet business, read on.
How much does it REALLY cost to start an internet business?
Before I answer that question, let me tell you how much I invested in building my first blogging business in the first year?
That was it, just $99.
That $99 got me a website, so a domain name and some web hosting.
That’s all I needed to start with.
And if you’re thinking of building a business online too, that’s all you should ever have to invest in the first year at least.
I spent the first 12 months creating useful, compelling, helpful content, and lots of it too.
As I built my blog I started to create some digital products to sell online. Mostly in the form of short strategy guides and eBooks.
I did blog commenting and guest blogging.
I reached out and connected with like minded folks in my industry.
I learned from top leaders and influencers.
I did my own research, learning as much as I could about blogging and internet business.
I read books.
Subscribed to reputable and informative websites. Which is free by the way.
In the second year, when my blog was starting to make a little bit of money, I started investing in some new tools to build my business up.
I then added some reviews and video tutorials of the tools I was using to help me build my business. This made me a little bit more money.
Eventually I started adding services.
I did NOT waste hundreds or thousands of $$$ of my hard earned cash on crappy systems, money making courses, business strategy scams or trashy affiliate membership sites.
No, no, no…
(What I mean by affiliate membership sites by the way, are those that ask you to pay a monthly premium to earn money)
Please don’t get me wrong here, I’m sure there’s some real genuine courses out there that will teach you how to build a great business online.
But I’m sure none of those sites have the most shady looking video promo ads in the world, making ridiculous claims that you can be earning 6-figures online in your first year.
There are books on Amazon you can pick up for a few bucks with better information.
It just doesn’t happen.
I genuinely want to build a business online, what should I do first?
As you’ve probably already gathered, you need a website.
Some people will argue that you don’t need a website. But having your own website or a blog will give you more control and ownership over your content, products and services.
So to start with grab some affordable web hosting and a domain name. You can find both of those things here with SiteGround.
Once you have your WordPress website setup, install a free theme, the TwentySeventeen theme looks pretty neat.
That’s really all you need to invest in financially in the first year. Nothing else is needed.

The next type of currency you need to invest into building your internet business comes in the form of “time”.

Conclusion: Avoid the money making scams and shady online business systems!
Don’t get sucked into shady online business systems or money making scams. Don’t fall for premium systems, membership sites that promise things that are simply too good to be true.
It’s that simple.
The countless stories I have read in the comment section of many blogs and forums about these scams are unreal.
I can’t even believe that some people would be silly enough to invest all their hard earned cash into them either. But we’re only humans after all right?
If you’re not too savvy when it comes to starting your first internet business, you could be next to get caught up. Just remember this post is all I ask before you make any decisions to part with your money.
