Getting Started In 2020

This page is for you if you're thinking about starting a blog, or if you've already started your blog and want to take it to the next phase.

If you're in the process of starting your blog, first of all, I want to congratulate you. Seriously, I cannot encourage you enough to make a good go of it, because I believe you're making the right decision.

How do I know this?

Because I made the same decision ten years ago.

I started my blog in August of 2010, and at the time, I had no idea what I was getting myself into.

I understood the benefits of blogging because I was already running a successful eCommerce business selling art online. However, nothing could have prepared me for what was to come.

Fast forward ten years and I've' made blogging my business. I had no idea it would turn into a business when I began.

So, it is time for you to take your place under the spotlight and start a blog that will hopefully change your life.

Starting a blog from scratch

First of all, if you're starting a blog from complete scratch, here's what you're going to need -

  1. Passion - The most important ingredient of them all.
  2. A domain name and some web hosting - You can get these together here (Affiliate link).
  3. WordPress - Blog creation tool.
  4. Some essential plugins - I'll explain later.

OK, so here's how to get started.

1. Get your domain name and hosting

As I mentioned earlier, you can get web hosting and your domain name together.

I use and recommend SiteGround (Affiliate link) for secure and reliable hosting. However, you might also want to check out Bluehost (Affiliate link) or WPXHosting (Affiliate link) and compare pricing.

2. Install WordPress

WordPress is an Open Source CMS website creation software. It is one of the most popular frameworks for building blogs and websites.

When you purchase web hosting from one of the providers mentioned above, you will have the choice to create a WordPress blog right from your hosting dashboard.

That being said, here is a link to an in-depth guide and tutorial that I created that will help you to get your WordPress blog set up quickly and painlessly.

3. Install some plugins

Plugins are like add-ons that you install into your WordPress blog to add new features and improve functionality.

For a brand new blog, you really don't need to go over the top with installing many plugins. The link I shared above, to the WordPress setup guide, should also outline some essential plugins to install. I've also listed them below for your convenience -

  1. RankMath SEO (Download here)
  2. WP Super Cache (Download here)
  3. SocialSnap (Premium or Free Download here)
  4. Thrive Leads (Get it here). This is a premium and a must-have plugin for building your email list.

Don't just build a blog, build a business!

Once you've successfully launched your blog, your top priorities will be to create high-quality, relevant content and to grow your readership.

You have to be consistent and persistent with both of these, it doesn't matter whether you blog daily, weekly, or monthly.

That being said, creating valuable content is just a small part of the blogging equation. Doing marketing and promotion will play a huge roll in your blog's growth and success.

Now, this is much easier said than done and will take up an enormous amount of your time. But that doesn't matter, because you're super motivated, right?

Well, motivation is just one of the ingredients needed. If you really want to be successful with your blog, you need to treat it as a business venture. I'm assuming, of course, you plan on monetizing your blog someday.

If you've already started your blog, perhaps you're already monetizing right now. Like any website business venture, you need to be organized and have a plan.

Talking of plans, check out my Ultimate Pro Blog Planner Workbook. This is a PDF eBook consisting of 49+ printable templates to help you plan, manage, organize, and grow your blog like a real business.

Monetizing your blog

If you want to turn your blog into a profitable online business, you need to come up with a monetization strategy that will work for your blog.

Throwing up a bunch of affiliate banners or plaguing your content with affiliate links is not the smartest way to monetize your blog.

That might work for bloggers that already have an established reader-base and tons of free organic traffic, but if you're just starting out, you're going to have to work hard and test to see what works best for your own blog.

In order to create a decent income stream from blogging, you've got to broaden your mind too.

Here are some ideas that might interest you -

  • Create and sell your own info-based products such as an online course or eBook.
  • Review various products and services relevant to your niche. You can start by reviewing all the tools you currently use for your blog, like hosting, themes, plugins, software, etc. Check out this post for a list of top affiliate programs for bloggers.
  • Offer services, such as coaching, consulting, copywriting, design, etc.
  • Sell advertising space on your blog. (Not useful if you have a blog with little traffic).
  • Publish sponsored posts. (Get paid for publishing blog posts from other authors on your blog).
