Hey folks, I love writing long blog posts as some of you may know. The benefits of writing pillar articles on your blog are of many, but writing eBook sized blog posts every time comes with a lot of challenges and pressures, let’s take a look at 3 of them right now.
1. Maintaining Reader Interest – This is the big one for me, sure writing super long blog posts might be great for good old Google, it might be super useful for the majority of your audience, but one challenge it comes with is ensuring you keep reader interest at the same time, and all the time.
If you’re going to write ‘a bible for a blog post’ each time you sit down at your computer, you’d better make sure you do everything you can to not make your post sound boring, or your readers will simply lose interest when reading them. Check out this post for tips on writing super long blog posts without driving your readers to boredom.
2. You Need To Do An Immense Amount Of Learning And Research – Let’s face it, the ultimate purpose of writing epic long blog posts is to teach rather than to tell right? I mean seriously, no one wants to be told something in 2,000+ words, that’s just ludicrous. You can easily explain something very well in 400 words or less in my opinion.
So what ever it is you’re going to write about that needs to be lengthly in context, it better be good, so you need to know your crap well before you start to write your marathon post. That means getting your facts straight, finding stuff to backup your claims and theories, finding and using relevant data and statistics, finding suitable images and other reliable content mediums, and the rest…
3. You Need To Devote An Immense Amount Of Time ‘Creating’ – Lastly, writing a 2,000 plus word blog post doesn’t just happen in 30 minutes, like this little post took.
You’ve got to invest an immense amount of time and resource crafting eBook sized posts carefully, then you’ve got to spend even more time editing and proof reading the darn things before publishing them, not to mention optimising for search and social and what have you. Check out this post I wrote for tips on how to write perfectly crafted blog posts every time.
So go ahead, write massive long blog posts all you want, just make sure you don’t end up falling flat on your face doing it, because if your readers get bored, or if it’s clear you haven’t done your research properly, or if it shows you haven’t spent much time crafting a quality post, you’re going to be in serious trouble.
