I’ll never forget the day I started blogging for the first time back in 2010.
I had a new idea, a brand new blog, a new goal, a new vision and a new mindset. More over, I was facing a new challenge. Could I really make this blogging thing work?
I remember writing my first few posts and feeling really buzzed about it.
I remember publishing about a dozen posts and feeling even more pumped about the possibilities, and what I could achieve with blogging.
I was really inspired by some of the blogs and bloggers I was following and reading at the time, including Darren Rowse’s ProBlogger.com and John Chow’s JohnChow.com
After three months of hard work, I started to get more traffic.
After six months, and after having published almost 60 blog posts, traffic was still increasing, but at an ever so slow rate.
In fact I was getting about 50 visits per day from my 6 month old blog.
Then something hit me.
I was getting traffic, and not very much of it, but more critically, I realised very few people were actually reading, subscribing, sharing or even commenting on my blog.
In other words, I was getting close to zero engagement.
And before you ask about my content, no, the content wasn’t bad. It wasn’t great in comparison to the content I’m putting out on my blog today, but it wasn’t bad.
Almost 90% of my visits came from Google and other search engines.
I began doing some things to try and promote my blog and content.
I left hundreds of comments on other blogs. I guest blogged on every single website that would accept my guest posts, and yep the traffic kept increasing, and so was the engagement, but it was still quite low.
This went of for two more years until 2012, when Google unleashed a can of whoop-ass on my blog with Google Panda, then penguin.
At the time I was getting around 500+ visits per day, and again 80% of that traffic came from Google and other search engines.
My bounce rate was pretty high too, around 75% I think.
Check out some of the screen grabs below to see some of my traffic stats, just before Google Panda and Penguin slaps!

Back to where I started…
Almost three years of hard work wasted, my rankings tanked, my traffic and whatever engagement I had at the time, gone.
I was forced to start over again with a brand new blog, because I felt that I made so many mistakes the first time around.
Foremost, I told myself that I would never, ever put all my eggs in one basket and rely on one single traffic source for my blog again.
Me and Google were done.
